Background Mental health care pivoted to telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic, and there is uncertainty around the sustainability of this rapid shift. Objective This study examined how intentions to continue using telemedicine after the COVID-19 pandemic are influenced by provider perceptions of usefulness, ease of use, and professional social influence, facilitating organizational conditions. Methods We conducted a web-based, cross-sectional survey of 369 telemental health providers between February and March 2021. A hierarchical linear regression analysis was conducted to predict intentions to continue using telemedicine after the COVID-19 pandemic. Results Most providers began using telemedicine in March 2020 or later (257/369, 69.6%) and attended to ≥50% of their clients via telemedicine (299/369, 81.0%). Intention to continue using telemedicine after the COVID-19 pandemic was predicted by the telemedicine caseload (β=.10; P=.005), perceived usefulness in general (β=.10; P=.008), ease of use (β=.08; P=.04), social influence (β=.68; P<.001), and facilitating conditions (β=.08; P=.047). Conclusions Exploration of the predictors of telemedicine usage beyond the COVID-19 pandemic aids in surveillance of telemedicine usage, integration with future clinic workflows, and the shaping of public policy. It is important to consider telemedicine services as not only a response to a crisis but also an effective and useful solution for everyday life. Our results suggest widespread, sustainable telemedicine adoption.

Patient and Physician Satisfaction with Telemedicine in Cancer Care in Saskatchewan: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Telemedicine is a useful tool that connects patients to their care team remotely and improves access to medical care for rural residents. This study aimed to determine the telemedicine experience of both rural patients with cancer and their physicians, and to explore factors associated with a positive patient experience. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, cancer patients and physicians in Saskatchewan completed a paper-based survey composed of 32 items or an electronic survey of 18 items, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess patient satisfaction in relation to various sociodemographic and cancer-related factors. Results: Overall, 25 physicians and 165 patients participated in the study. Among the physicians, 94% were confident in their telemedicine assessment, 58% agreed that telemedicine improved clinical efficiency, and 73% agreed that doctor–patient rapport was unimpaired with telemedicine. Of 165 patients, 61% had used telemedicine for the first time, 81% felt that their needs were met, 83% were satisfied with the quality of their care, and 88% had a positive experience. Overall, 83% patients vs. 45% physicians preferred telemedicine to a face-to-face clinic visit (p = 0.005). On univariate analysis, patients ≥ 65 years old had a greater positive telemedicine experience compared to patients < 65 years old (odds ratio 4.1 [1.2–13.8], p = 0.02). Conclusion: Both patients and physicians have a high rate of positive experiences with telemedicine. However, patients have a higher preference for telemedicine over face-to-face visits compared to physicians. In addition, elderly patients have more positive telemedicine experiences compared to younger patients.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth became a popular solution for the remote provision of primary care by General Practitioners (GPs) in Poland. This study aimed to assess the GPs’ acceptance of telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland and to explain the factors that drive GPs’ need to implement a telehealth system in primary care using the modified Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). In Poland, 361 GPs from a representative sample of 361 clinics drawn from 21.500 outpatient institutions in Poland participated in the empirical study. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to evaluate the causal relationships that were formulated in the proposed model. Research has shown that Polish GPs reported a positive perception and high acceptance of the telehealth system during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, the results show that the social factors (image, decision autonomy, perception of patient interaction) significantly positively influence the technological factors (perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness) that influence the need to implement a telehealth system. The proposed socio-technological model can serve as a theoretical basis for future research and offer empirical predictions for practitioners and researchers in health departments, governments, and primary care settings.
