Biases in research: risk factors for non-replicability in psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy research

Abstract: Replicability of findings is an essential prerequisite of research. For both basic and clinical research, however, low replicability of findings has recently been reported. Replicability may be affected by research biases not sufficiently controlled for by the existing research standards. Several biases such as researcher allegiance or selective reporting are well-known for affecting results. For psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy research, specific additional biases may affect outcome (e.g. therapist allegianc… Show more

“…Just as there is methodological and statistical doubt as to what degree even a well‐established psychotherapy like cognitive‐behavioral therapy (CBT) is at all effective, doubt has been voiced as to what degree medications like antidepressants have real effects.…”

“…In this section, I will cover different biases and flaws that are threats to the quality of the evidence. As noted by Leichsenring et al (2017), although, biases are recognized in the literature, several important biases are not controlled for, and as stated by Cuijpers et al (2018a), psychotherapy researchers tend not to be aware of the fundamental problems.…”

“…Behavioral research is often criticized for its lack of reproducibility. 1 Suboptimal recruitment and retention rates contribute to lack of replication, inadequate statistical power, ascertainment bias, threats to generalizability, and reduced internal validity, diminishing impact. 2 Although recruitment and retention are critical, it is challenging to recruit families for research, particularly while they are experiencing the acute stress of a child's cancer diagnosis.…”
