“…Further, the DMPFC was activated in self-experiential states such as affect labeling (Taylor et al, 2003;Creswell et al, 2007;Lieberman et al, 2007) and mindful self-awareness without any external stimulation (Herwig et al, 2010). Further, this cortical structure has been found to be thicker in meditators (Lazar et al, 2005) and to be active during meditation (Hölzel et al, 2007;Brewer et al, 2011;Ott et al, 2011). However in comparison with meditation novices, experienced meditators showed decreased DMPFC activations in a mindful state (Farb et al, 2007) or when viewing emotional pictures during meditation (Taylor et al, 2011).…”

“…We selected an audiobook as a control since it requires a comparable amount of attention and concentration to the meditation task, although the focus of attention in the two tasks was necessarily, and importantly, different. We decided that this better matched the meditation task in comparison with a mental arithmetic task (Hölzel et al, 2007) or no task at all. The audio recordings were presented using Beyerdynamic DT770 closed-back headphones.…”

“…In order to achieve the benefits that mindfulness can offer, physicians must embrace the daily practice of being present. The daily institution of a relaxation technique such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing can be transforming [4,7,8]. All of these are means of cultivating mindfulness and getting back to the now, which may help achieve peace and fulfillment -one patient, one operation, one relationship, one moment at a time.…”
