Human adenovirus Ad-36 induces adipogenesis via its E4 orf-1 gene

Abstract: Objective: Understanding the regulation of adipocyte differentiation by cellular and extracellular factors is crucial for better management of chronic conditions such as obesity, insulin resistance and lipodystrophy. Experimental infection of rats with a human adenovirus type 36 (Ad-36) improves insulin sensitivity and promotes adipogenesis, reminiscent of the effect of thiozolinediones. Therefore, we investigated the role of Ad-36 as a novel regulator of the adipogenic process. Design and Results: Even in the… Show more

“…The effect of Ad-36 on adipose tissue cannot be attributed simply to any viral infection. Ad-2, another human adenovirus, which is nonadipogenic in vivo and in vitro (23,33), was used as a negative control. In addition, we conducted a plaque-forming unit assay in hASCs.…”

“…5 An indirect evidence of the relationship between eating habits and weight gain come from the literature on the (negative) effect of fast food prices on adolescent BMI (see Chou et al, 2005;Powell et al, 2007;Auld and Powell, 2008;Powell and Bao, 2009). See also Cutler et al (2003) which relates the declining relative price of fast food and the increase in fast food restaurant availability over time to increasing obesity in the U.S. 6 We acknowledge that some recent studies have pointed that obesity might be partially due to a virus ad-36 (see Rogers et al, 2007). 7 Of course, having obese peers may influence a student's tolerance for being obese and therefore his weight management behaviours.…”

“…Adipogenesis and lipid accumulation decreased when Ad36 E4 orf-1 was knocked down by RNAi (58). Therefore, Ad36 E4 orf-1 could play an important role in inducing adipogenesis.…”
