Individual differences in trait anhedonia: a structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging study in non-clinical subjects

Abstract: Anhedonia, the reduced capacity to gain pleasure from pleasurable experiences, is a key symptom of major depression and schizophrenia. Reduced hedonic capacity can also be measured as an enduring trait in non-clinical subjects. Such altered hedonic capacity is likely the result of a basic neuropsychophysiological dysfunction and a vulnerability marker that potentially precedes and contributes to the liability of developing psychiatric disorders. The characterization of the structural and functional neural corr… Show more

“…In healthy subjects the IMPC is involved in the processing of emotional stimuli (Amodio and Frith, 2006;Phan et al, 2002), attention (Geday et al, 2003(Geday et al, , 2007Raichle et al, 2001), and social perception (Geday et al, 2003;Harvey et al, 2007b). In the present study, we focused on emotional reactivity, because the IMPC as ROI is deactivated by attention to an emotional stimulus (Geday et al, 2003(Geday et al, , 2007.…”

“…MOFC lesions in humans relate to deficits in reward-based learning, which can result in apathy and lack of affect (Hornak et al 2003;Fellows & Farah, 2005;Fisher et al 2011;Kühn & Gallinat, 2012). Accordingly, functional and structural imaging studies in healthy cohorts have reported associations between MOFC activity (and thickness) and characteristics that are comparable to the negative symptoms observed in schizophrenia (Harvey et al 2007;Ducharme et al 2014). For instance, functional connectivity between the orbitofrontal cortex and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was found to be dependent on levels of motivation (Szatkowska et al 2008).…”

“…Specifically, given prior research relating anhedonia to reward system dysfunction in multiple psychiatric disorders (Juckel et al, 2006;Wolf, 2006;Harvey et al, 2007;Wolf et al, 2008;Pizzagalli et al, 2009;Treadway and Zald, 2011;Gabbay et al, 2013;Hägele et al, 2014) anhedonia was examined using a sub-set of anhedonia-related items from the BDI (Joiner et al, 2003). Furthermore, we similarly examined the relationship with BDI items unrelated to anhedonia.…”
