Decarbonisation of the iron and steel (I&S) industry is crucial in the efforts to meet the EU GHG emission reduction objectives in 2030 … 2050. Promoting decarbonisation in this sector will necessarily require the identification, development, and diffusion of breakthrough technologies for I&S production. This paper uses an approach inspired by the Technology Innovation System (TIS) to analyse the development of technology in the EU I&S industry and identify potential avenues of its decarbonisation. We have described key elements of the TIS, analyse the functioning of these elements and their interactions in a more general context of innovation dynamics and policy design; The focus has been put on the role of actors and the identification of the main specific blocking and inducement mechanism in the TIS to better explain its functioning. Risks and uncertainties have also been discussed. We argue that deep decarbonisation in the I&S industry is feasible but its TIS requires firm support, mostly political, to finance intensive R&D and reduce the business risk. To this end, all actors shall support more effectively the invention and implementation of new radical production technologies. The recommendations are mostly addressed to politicians although stressing the importance of collaboration of all actors.

Industry 4.0 (I4.0) includes an important regeneration of production and management systems within manufacturing, where the majority of the procedures will be entirely or partially automated. However, there are insufficient research studies related to I4.0 development assessment based on the various requirement factors to enable countries to measure their own conditions and to make future national strategies and roadmaps for their activities in this field. Thus, this paper develops a comprehensive framework to assess the countries' readiness level in I4.0 development. The research is conducted in several steps. First, the main required clusters and their criteria of I4.0 development assessment such as technological, social, economic, political and environmental clusters are determined. Second, the importance of the clusters and their criteria are specified using the Fuzzy DEMATLE and Fuzzy ANP techniques. Third, the countries are ranked using the VIKOR technique. In this study, the conditions of I4.0 development for South Korea, the United States, China, Iran, Japan, and Germany are assessed based on the proposed framework. The ranking results show the United States, Germany, and Japan got ranked first to third, based on the obtained VIKOR index, 0.000, 0.528, and 0.559, respectively. The framework is verified using sensitivity analysis and validated based on the countries' existing plans. The evaluation results are rescannable. The result shows that the United States, Germany, Japan, and South Korea got high scores especially in the technological cluster and also some challenges in the criteria related to the social and cultural clusters. On the other hand, China and Iran got the highest score in the labor force criterion of the social cluster (0.023) and the intercultural understanding criterion of the cultural cluster (0.006), respectively, however, they need to strengthen the technological cluster ''to be hopeful of having'' an active role in future global marketing.

Purpose of Review This paper provides an overview of the role of humans and robots in smart factories, their connection to Industry 4.0, and which progress they make when it comes to related technologies. Recent Findings The current study shows that a decade was not enough to provide a reference implementation or application of Industry 4.0, like smart factories. In 2011, Industry 4.0 was mentioned for the first time in the scientific community. Industry 4.0 arrived with many new enabling technologies and buzzwords, e.g., Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), and Digital Twins (DT). Summary This paper first defines smart factories and smart manufacturing in relation to the role of humans and robots. Followed by an overview of selected technologies in smart factories. Concluded by future prospects and its' relation to smart manufacturing.
