Is the Abstract a Mere Teaser? Evaluating Generosity of Article Abstracts in the Environmental Sciences

Abstract: An abstract is not only a mirror of the full article; it also aims to draw attention to the most important information of the document it summarizes. Many studies have compared abstracts with full texts for their informativeness. In contrast to previous studies, we propose to investigate this relation based not only on the amount of information given by the abstract but also on its importance. The main objective of this paper is to introduce a new metric called GEM to measure the "generosity" or representative… Show more

“…Nevertheless, we can assume that the findings would be even better if full-texts and not only Title-Abstract-Keywords metadata were taken into account. This could also have avoided a possible bias due to the fact that abstracts have evolved over time, and in particular have proved to become more informative (Ermakova et al 2018). But on the other hand, the undertaking of collecting all the full-texts would have been daunting.…”

“…7 Although this approach obviously reduces our text corpus, we argue that (extended) abstracts are a reliable source for our analyses for at least three reasons: First, the definition of a scientific abstract implies that it should clarify (i) why the research was conducted, (ii) what the paper is about and what are the main conclusions of the research and (iii), how and based on which specific methodology the authors arrived at their conclusions. Thus an abstract aims to call attention to the most important information of a paper (Ermakova et al 2018). Second, abstracts serve as essential screening devices and are in fact the section of a paper, which is read by a broader audience (Bondi 2014).…”

“…Although this approach obviously reduces our text corpus, we argue that abstracts (and conclusions) are a reliable source for the analysis of the trade narrative in economics elite-discourse for at least two reasons: First, the definition of a scientific abstract implies that it should clarify (i) why the research was conducted, (ii) what the paper is about and what are the main conclusions of the research and (iii), how and based on which specific methodology the authors arrived at their conclusions. Thus an abstract aims to call attention to the most important information of a paper (Ermakova, Bordignon, Turenne, & Noel, 2018;Holtz, 2011;Orasan, 2001). Second, due to its role of communicating research results to a broader public at least within the economics profession, abstracts ought to be written in rather plain language, which in turn enables us to apply discourse analytical methods in the first place.…”
