Measuring social media activity of scientific literature: an exhaustive comparison of scopus and novel altmetrics big data

Abstract: This paper measures social media activity of 15 broad scientific disciplines indexed in Scopus database using Altmetric.com data. First, the presence of Altmetric.com data in Scopus database is investigated, overall and across disciplines. Second, the correlation between the bibliometric and altmetric indices is examined using Spearman correlation. Third, a zero-truncated negative binomial model is used to determine the association of various factors with increasing or decreasing citations. Lastly, the effecti… Show more

“…We plotted receiveroperating characteristic (ROC) curves to identify the association between individual mentionsof articles for each platform (Twitter, FB, Mendeley) and journal class (SMP or NSMP). Primarily, ROC-AUC procedure is used to test/ compare the performance of one or more classification algorithms, but we have utilized this mechanism to analyze the association strength of features and classes as this was found useful earlier (Hassan et al, 2017). The Logistic Regression model is used to classify the articles published in collected journals.…”

“…We selected Twitter as it is effective for spreading information and has been widely adopted by the research community; indeed, tweets exceed 91% of the total social media activities recorded by altmetrics. 13 By producing simpler expressions of research findings, we hoped to increase the chances of tweets diffusing beyond the immediate academic networks that form around a discipline. Likely neighbouring networks might include a more diverse range of interested actors from business, city/regional/national policymaking, cultural partners, the healthcare sector, international agencies, local community, media, national education and the general public.…”

“…Moreover, a large and growing body of literature has investigated different online activities. The research by Hassan et al, (2017) examined the online activity of scholarly publications, such as news sites, social media platforms, blogs, video sites, and reference management tools. The researchers pointed out that the social media activities, across disciplines, increase in the presence of Altmetric.com data in Scopus database, rapidly.…”
