Low birth weight is a known comorbidity of congenital heart disease (CHD). This study examines the relationship between CHD and birth weight of singletons, while attempting to remove factors that influence birth weight, and assesses the impact of CHD on growth in later life. The main objective is to study the relationship between birthweight and CHD. This is a cross-sectional study of 141 samples, covering all patients who were referred to the Paediatric Echocardiography Lab at Ahmed Gasim Cardiac Centre between September and October 2016. Infants with genetic syndromes or other major extracardiac abnormalities were excluded. The findings of this study clearly demonstrate that infants with CHD are more likely to be of low birth weight than the general Sudanese population, by a factor of 2.6. Of the sample, 31.9% were born with low or very low birthweight. The mean birth weight of the cases was 2.59 kg, which is 17.3% and 542.4 g less than the national average. CHD that cause a decrement in birth weight in a descending order of severity were atrial septal defect (-721 g/23%), patent ductus arteriosus (-669 g/21%), ventricular septal defect (-610 g/19%), pulmonary stenosis (-548 g/13%) and tetralogy of Fallot (248 g/8%). Pre/postnatal growth impairment is a common feature among children with CHD. No statistically significant relationship was found between the degree of birth weight/weight to age decrement and the specific type of hemodynamic disturbance. Our results are comparable to other studies that have been undertaken. However, Sudanese patients display larger birthweight deficits than other populations.

ABSTRAKGizi buruk atau malnutrisi akut adalah suatu bentuk terparah akibat kurang gizi menahun, ada atau tidaknya oedeme atau berat badan per umur < -3 SD sesuai dengan standar pertumbuhan WHO. Malnutrisi mempengaruhi pertumbuhan fisik, morbiditas, mortalitas, perkembangan kognitif, reproduksi, dan kapasitas kerja fisik dan akibatnya berdampak pada kinerja manusia, dan kesehatan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor risiko gizi buruk pada balita. Jenis penelitian case control study. Populasi dan sampel pada penelitian ini balita status gizi baik dan buruk yang berada di wilayah kerja Puskesmas Malei Kecamatan Balaesang Tanjung. Penelitian dimulai pada bulan Januari 2017.Teknik pengambilan sampel dengan total sampling sesuai kriteria inklusi dan eksklusi sebanyak 56 sampel yang terdiri atas kasus dan control. Hasil analisis bivariat menunjukkan tingkat asupan energi (OR=3,84;95%CI 0,68-21,51), tingkat asupan protein (OR=4,94;95%CI 0,50-48,29) dan riwayat penyakit infeksi (OR=2,13;95%CI 0,61-7,32) berhubungan signifikan dengan gizi buruk. Disisi lain berdasarkan analisis multivariabel dengan mengendalikan riwayat BBLR menunjukkan tingkat asupan protein memiliki hubungan kuat dengan risiko gizi buruk dibandingkan variabel lainnya. Kesimpulan: tingkat asupan energi, tingkat asupan protein dan penyakit infeksi merupakan faktor risiko gizi buruk pada balita. Saran: Disarankan kepada orang tua utamanya ibu untuk lebih memperhatikan asupan makan serta PHBS anak balitanya sehingga dapat mengurangi timbulnya penyakit infeksi yang merupakan faktor risiko kejadian gizi buruk (OR = 3,84, 95% CI 0,51), protein intake level (OR = 4,94; 95% CI 0,29) and history of disease infection (OR = 2.13;

In the last decades, deficiency of macro‐ and micronutrients was considered as a serious problem associated with the increase in the human population. To meet the increased demand for food consumption, the wild relative plant might serve as an important source of new genetic material for increasing macro‐ and micronutrients. To investigate this, the variations in protein content, in vitro protein digestibility, tannin content, phytic acid content, total polyphenol content, and total and bioavailability of minerals were studied in grains of ten wild sorghums and two released sorghum cultivars. The results showed significant differences ( p ≤ 0.05) in all quality tests among the genotypes. The highest percentage of total protein contents and in vitro protein digestibility were encountered in the grains of PQ‐434 (14.6%) and the released cultivar AG8 (49.8%), respectively, while the highest concentrations of total and bioavailable iron were found in the grains of Almahkara (3.17 mg/100 g) and Abusabiba (92.8 mg/100 g), respectively. The grains of wild sorghum genotype Adar Umbatikh grains were found to possess higher total zinc contents. The PCA identified only five components of eigenvalues greater than one and cumulatively accounted for 88% of the total variation. It could be concluded that Almahkara and PQ‐434 could be used as potential sources for iron and protein sorghum biofortification, respectively. Results from this study might be used in the development of new value‐added products from wild sorghum grains by‐products.
