Quantifying the relationship between pollen and vegetation is an essential step in the pollen-based quantitative reconstruction of past vegetation cover. In this study, we use the Extended R-Value (ERV) model and a modern dataset of pollen (collected from moss polsters) and related vegetation from 50 sites in the Daba Mountains (subtropical China) to (i) estimate the relevant source area of pollen (RSAP) of the moss samples and the relative pollen productivities (RPPs) of nine major plant taxa-characteristic of the region, and (ii) evaluate the obtained RPPs. The RSAP estimates of moss polsters vary between 225 and 610 m depending on the ERV submodels and models of pollen dispersal and deposition used. The RPP estimates are different from values published in previous studies from temperate and subtropical China. This may be explained by differences in methodology, climate and vegetation (species composition and spatial distribution), of which vegetation is probably the most important factor. The ranking of the RPP estimates for the nine taxa is Pinus > Juglandaceae > D − Quercus (deciduous Quercus) > Poaceae > Rosaceae > Cyperaceae > Anacardiaceae > Castanea > Fabaceae. We use a 'leave-one-out' cross-validation strategy and the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm (LRA) for pollen-based reconstruction of regional and local plant cover to evaluate the ERV model-based RPP estimates. Both the REVEALS (Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites)-based and the LOVE (LOcal Vegetation Estimates)-based plant cover using the RPP estimates are closer to the modern vegetation composition than pollen percentages, thus confirming the applicability of the ERV model and the LRA approach in subtropical China.Abbreviations. Quantitative understanding of vegetation dynamics over timespans beyond a century remains limited. In this regard, the pollen-based reconstruction of past vegetation enables unique research opportunities by quantifying changes in plant community compositions during hundreds to thousands of years. Critically, the methodological basis for most reconstruction approaches rests upon estimates of pollen productivity and dispersal. Previous studies, however, have reached contrasting conclusions concerning these estimates, which may be perceived to challenge the applicability and reliability of pollen-based reconstruction. Here we show that conflicting estimates of pollen production and dispersal are, at least in part, artifacts of fixed assumptions of pollen dispersal and insufficient spatial resolution of vegetation data surrounding the pollencollecting lake. We implemented a Bayesian statistical model that related pollen assemblages in surface sediments of 33 small lakes (<2 ha) in the northeastern United States, with surrounding vegetation ranging from 10 1 to >10 5 m from the lake margin. Our analysis revealed three key insights. First, pollen productivity is largely conserved within taxa and across forest types. Second, when local (within a 1-km radius) vegetation abundances are not considered, pollen-source areas may be overestimated for some common taxa (Cupressaceae, Pinus, Quercus, and Tsuga). Third, pollen dispersal mechanisms may differ between local and regional scales; this is missed by pollendispersal models used in previous studies. These findings highlight the complex interactions between vegetation heterogeneity on the landscape and pollen dispersal. We suggest that, when estimating pollen productivity and dispersal, both detailed local and extended regional vegetation must be taken into account. Also, both deductive (mechanistic models) and inductive (statistical models) approaches are needed to better understand the emergent properties of pollen dispersal in heterogeneous landscapes.

A promising method of reconstructing palaeovegetation from pollen records uses 18 mathematical models of the relationship between pollen and vegetation, which can be 19 calibrated using the Extended R-Value (ERV) approach on datasets of modern pollen 20 assemblages and related vegetation survey data. This study presents the results of 21 calibrating the models for non-arboreal pollen types in alpine meadow habitats on the 22 Tibetan Plateau. 23Pollen assemblages from surface soil samples and surrounding vegetation data 24 were collected for 30 randomly located sites in the Zoige Basin, northeastern Tibetan 25 Plateau.
