Research perspectives on serendipity and information encountering

Abstract: Serendipitous discovery has been a research topic for more than one hundred years, but only recently has it been the focus of attention in library and information science (LIS). In 1960, Bernier published the first article on serendipity in a LIS journal. The number of publications gradually grew until 1990s, after which the field experienced a significant interest by the LIS researchers. Currently, LIS researchers are studying serendipity and information encountering from different perspectives, ranging from … Show more

“…Agarwal [6] also posited that information encountering could happen at any point regardless of whether or not one was actively seeking something, which would be the case during Internet browsing. Erdelez et al [18] also pointed out that people have more and more opportunities to encounter information, instead of actively seeking information, which highlights the significant influence of serendipity on information acquisition. Therefore, we think that users may lose the sense of the passage of time because they immerse themselves in the serendipitous discovery of interesting or useful information, which attracts their attention, resulting in the phenomenon of flow and prolonging their online usage time.…”

“…Serendipity is identified after it has occurred, sometimes even after a significant amount of time has elapsed (Foster & Ellis, 2014). Data are gathered in two main ways: either semi-structured interviews (Erdelez et al, 2016;Makri & Blandford, 2012; or collections of reports of serendipity in either the first or third person (Van Andel, 1994;Yaqub, 2018). If serendipity is researched using retrospective narratives, then the person's understanding of serendipity is centered and directs our own understanding of it (cf.…”

“…In past studies, serendipity was defined as "happy accidents" (Magennis et al, 2016), "accidental discovery", or "unintended finding" (Yi et al, 2017). Oxford Dictionary stated that 'serendipity' is "the occurrence and development of events by chance happily or beneficially,' while the origin of the term was "making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity," (Erdelez et al, 2016). For more than a centuries, the topic of serendipity has been studied in various disciplines (Erdelez et al, 2016) such as medicine, entrepreneurship, organizational sciences and information sciences (Yi et al, 2017).…”
