Response selection in the human anterior cingulate cortex

Abstract: The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) has been proposed as part of the brain's attentional control network, but the exact nature of its involvement in cognitive and motor operations is under debate. Assessing effects of human ACC damage directly addresses the problem of ACC function. We report that executive control processes of a patient with a focal right hemisphere anterior cingulate lesion were not compromised. However, her performance level depended on the response modality used. Under the same task require… Show more

“…Recently, Hornak and colleagues have shown that selective lesions to bilateral anterior cingulate cortex produce disturbances in personality functioning similar to those observed in patients with orbital frontal lesions (Hornak et al, 2003). In humans, anterior cingulate lesions lead to perseveration (Mesulam, 2000), difficulties in affective face and voice identification (Hornak et al, 2003), error monitoring (Swick and Jovanovic, 2002;Swick and Turken, 2002;Turken and Swick, 1999) and response inhibition abnormalities (Degos et al, 1993;Tekin and Cummings, 2002). Psychopathy has long been associated with perseveration (see review by , apathy (Cleckley, 1941;McCord and McCord, 1964), difficulties in identifying some affective face stimuli (Blair et al, 1997;Kosson et al, 2002), and more recently, error monitoring (Bates et al, submitted for publication) and response inhibition abnormalities (Kiehl et al, 2000b;Lapierre et al, 1995).…”

“…Benedict et al, 2002;Crottaz-Herbette & Menon, 2006). Interestingly, one of the brain areas implicated in auditory attention, the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) on the medial surface of the human brain, is also involved in high-order control of ocular, vocal, and manual responses (e.g., Paus, 2001;Pickard & Strick, 1996;Roelofs, 2008a;Roelofs, Van Turennout, & Coles, 2006;Turken & Swick, 1999), although the involvement of part of the ACC is independent of response modality (Barch et al, 2001). Also, the ACC is involved in the suppression of activity in auditory cortex during vocalization by monkeys (Müller-Preuss et al, 1980;Müller-Preuss & Ploog, 1981).…”

“…Having said this, it should be acknowledged that neuropsychological findings have been quite variable. Some studies have found no clear-cut deficits in cognitive control, noting instead problems with response selection [68] or autonomic function [69]. Further work clarifying the effects of ACC damage is warranted.…”
