Self-Reported Long Total Sleep Duration Is Associated With Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract: OBJECTIVETo examine the association between total sleep duration and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) in older Chinese.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODSCross-sectional analysis of baseline data from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study (GBCS) was performed. Participants (n = 29,333) were aged ≥50 years. Risk of MetSyn and its components were identified for self-reported total sleep duration.RESULTSParticipants reporting long (≥9 h) and short (<6 h) total sleep duration had increased odds ratio (OR) of 1.1… Show more

“…However, the data on the U-shaped association between MetS and sleep duration have been rather conflicting. Although a few studies have shown the U-shaped association between sleep duration and MetS (19,24,25,31), a few (27,37) have shown that the association only holds true for short sleep, and a recent study (22) shows the opposite relation. An earlier metaanalysis by Ju and Choi (19) on 12 cross-sectional studies, however, does prove the classic U-shaped association.…”

“…Some of them show a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and the prevalence of MetS [10]. It has been shown in some papers that MetS is only associated with short sleep duration [12][13][14][15] or long sleep duration [16][17][18]. In another paper, however, there was no relationship found between sleep duration and the risk of MetS [19].…”
