“…Answers are given according to a 10 five-point ordinal response scale with categories '5-poor', '4-not so good', '3-fair', '2-good' and '1-excellent'. Self-assessed health has been proven to have value in predicting objective health outcomes, morbidity and mortality (Idler and Benyamini, 1997;Franks et al, 2003).…”

“…Perceived health incorporates patients' perspective about their health status; it also reliably predicts morbidity and mortality (Franks, Gold, & Fischella, 2003). Although a number of studies have examined predictors of perceived health status in the general population (Bailis, Segall, & Chipperfield, 2003;Franks et al, 2003;Subramanian, Kim, & Kawachi, 2002), there is only limited research examining perceived health among homeless adults, and what is available is dated. For example, the early work of Ropers and Boyer (1987) found that the most important predictors of perceived health status, as rated poorly by homeless individuals, were the presence of a chronic condition, sustained depression, and symptomatology related to significant alcohol use.…”

“…The feeling of wellbeing extrapolates the presence of objective conditions, although it presents well-established relationships with clinical conditions and with indicators of morbidity and mortality. 8 The progressive aging of the population and the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases have been pointed out as the main factors responsible for the development of disabilities during adulthood. 14 This results in questions about the presence of long-term illness or disabilities, with or without limitations on activities, in health surveys.…”
