The Human Sebocyte Culture Model Provides New Insights into Development and Management of Seborrhoea and Acne

Abstract: Seborrhoea and acne are exclusively human diseases and sebaceous gland differentiation is species specific. Therefore, fundamental research on human sebaceous cell function and control requires human in vitro models. The human sebocyte culture model, introduced in 1989, has been used in several studies to elucidate sebaceous gland activity and its regulation at the cellular level. Cultured human sebocytes have been shown to preserve important sebocytic characteristics, although they undergo an incomplete termi… Show more

“…SZ95 sebocytes (25) were maintained in Sebomed basal medium supplemented with 5 ng/ml human epidermal growth factor, 10% FCS (both from Biochrom, Berlin, Germany), 1% L-glutamine, 1% penicillin/streptomycin, and 1 mM CaCl 2 in a humidified atmosphere containing 5% CO 2 at 37˚C. Human melanocytes obtained from Tebu-bio (Portland, OR) were routinely grown in MGM-M2 plus all supplements (Cascade Biologics, Portland, OR).…”

“…Because acne does not exist outside the human system and no animal models for this disease are available, this immortalized human sebocyte cell line has evolved as an important research tool in acne research to study the influence of various immune mediators and neuropeptides (25).…”

“…The lack of an ideal animal model compatible to human SGs was surmounted in the last 10 years by the development of experimental models for the in vitro study of human SGs [14][15][16]19]. The latter have led to the identification of several, unknown or disregarded functions and finally to the complete revision of the SG role in human skin [20,21].…”
