Topographical organization and relationship with ventral striatal compartments of prefrontal corticostriatal projections in the rat

Abstract: The anterograde tracer Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin was used to examine the topographical organization of the projections to the striatum arising from the various cytoarchitectonic subdivisions of the prefrontal cortex in the rat. The relationship of the prefrontal cortical fibres with the compartmental organization of the ventral striatum was assessed by combining PHA-L tracing and enkephalin-immunohistochemistry. The prefrontal cortex projects bilaterally with an ipsilateral predominance to the striatu… Show more

“…These effects in the dorsomedial striatum contrast with lesions or temporary inactivation of the orbitofrontal cortex which also impair reversal learning, but lead to perseverative errors and not regressive errors (Chudasama & Robbins, 2003;Kim & Ragozzino, 2005). The orbitofrontal cortex is known to project to the dorsomedial striatum (Berendse, Galis-de Graaf & Groenewegen, 1992). Thus, these areas may be part of a larger neural circuit that supports behavioral flexibility by playing distinct, but complimentary roles to facilitate a shift in choice patterns.…”

“…The two latter regions are considered to be part of the sensorimotor cortex and are primarily involved in motor functions (Zilles and Wree 1995). They have different afferent inputs (from the somatosensory cortex, Berendse et al 1992), a different pattern of projections to the striatum (to more caudal and lateral striatal areas as compared with more rostral and medial projections to the striatum arising from the PL (Cg3) and IL (Conde et al 1995), and to the nucleus NEUROPSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY 1998-VOL. 19, NO.…”

Second, a neonatal lesion may allow more sparing or recovery of function than a similar adult lesion.…”

“…Specifically, on the basis of established anatomical connections (Berendse et al, 1992,Gabbott et al, 2005Room et al, 1985), we examined whether prelimbic prefrontal cortex c-Fos counts were correlated with those of nucleus accumbens core, and whether infralimbic prefrontal cortex c-Fos counts were correlated with those of nucleus accumbens shell. No significant correlations were found.…”
