Background: Researchers have contributed to the definition of SoTL; however, the literature is not conclusive on its definitions and attributes. Therefore, this study was an attempt to precisely define SoTL by its attributes, antecedents and consequences. Methods: The Walker and Avant (2011) concept analysis method was used. Results: The 9 emerged attributes are: Committed engagement in action, Critique-based, Disciplinary, Context-oriented, Critical enquiry process, Continuous deep reflection, Dynamic process, Shared publicly, and Learning focused. Conclusion: This study helps promote understanding and application of SoTL.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a serious consequence of hepatic cirrhosis (HC). Previous studies have demonstrated cognitive impairments in both clinical and animal experiments of HC. Some potential therapeutic agents have been used to alleviate the cognitive symptoms in the animal models of HC. In the current study, the possible effect of erythropoietin (ERY) as a potent neuroprotective agent on motor and cognitive impairments induced by HC has been studied. Male Wistar rats (180-200 g) underwent bile duct ligation (BDL) or sham surgery. Administration of ERY (5,000 IU/kg, i.p., daily for three days) was initiated 2 weeks after surgery and lasted for the next 28 days. Open field, rotarod, Morris water maze and passive avoidance learning was used to evaluate the motor and cognitive function of the animals. ANOVA and repeated measures ANOVA were used to analyze the data. p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. BDL rats had an increased level of hepatic enzymes and bilirubin. Impairment of balance function by BDL was reversed by ERY. Spatial and passive avoidance learning impairments observed in BDL rats were also reversed by chronic administration of ERY. ERY can be offered as a potential neuroprotective agent in the treatment of patients with HC that manifest mental dysfunctions. Though further studies are needed to clarify the exact mechanisms, the neuroprotective properties of ERY against BDL impairments were demonstrated in the current study.

Background Today, the use of virtual reality (VR) technology as an educational tool in dental education has expanded considerably. This study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using VR technology in teaching neutral zone and teeth arrangement. Methods This randomized trial was conducted at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, Iran in 2019. The study sample consisted of 50 six-year dental students who were randomly divided into experimental (n = 25) and control (n = 25) groups. Students’ performance in both groups was assessed using tests. A questionnaire was used to assess the usability of VR technology and students’ satisfaction with it. Results All faculty members confirmed the usability of VR technology in dental education. The majority of students (76%) were highly satisfied with the use of this technology in their learning process. The mean score of students was significantly higher in the experimental group (16.92 ± 1.12) than in the control group (16.14 ± 1.18). Conclusion In general, it can be argued that VR technology is useful and effective in the teaching–learning process. Therefore, its use in medical and dental schools can play an effective role in creating a dynamic, attractive, and successful learning environment.

Short messaging system (SMS) works as one of the most popular strategies for physicians’ behavior change via sending feedback and reminder messages. One of the areas in which SMS feedback can be effective on physicians’ behavior is CT scan ordering. This study investigates the effect of mobile phone SMS feedback on residents’ head CT scan ordering at a general teaching hospital in Iran. Through a three-month before-after experimental study, an intervention was conducted, and the CT scans ordered by an individual resident were evaluated every two weeks. Consequently, personal SMS-based feedback was provided to the residents, and the rate of CT per patient in the two phases of the study was analyzed. The mean CT scan ordered per patient decreased from 1.98 ± 1.09 to 1.74 ± 1.45, and this decrease was insignificant (P = 0.106). SMS-based feedback can reduce head CT scan ordering among residents; whereas this decline was not significant further studies are required to investigate its effectiveness.
