During the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, the concern for reducing disease transmission has led to a worldwide increase in face mask utilization. During this period, we have observed a corresponding increase in ocular irritation and dryness among regular mask users. This finding has not been previously described in the literature but has important implications on eye health and infection prevention, as mask use is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of lysosomal storage disorders caused by inborn errors of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) metabolism. These diseases are classified by enzyme deficiency into seven groups: type I, II, III, IV, VI, VII, and IX. GAG accumulation leads to characteristic clinical features. Some ophthalmic findings that are characteristic of MPS diseases include corneal clouding, retinal degeneration, decreased electroretinogram wave amplitude, optic atrophy, papilledema, and glaucoma. Current treatments such as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and enzyme replacement therapy have increased the life span of many MPS patients and created the need to improve management of ocular symptoms. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of ocular manifestations and treatment options for the various types of MPS.
Although the total complication rates between the 2 groups were similar, the microkeratome group had significantly more epithelial defects intraoperatively and the femtosecond laser group had significantly more DLK cases postoperatively.
The donor graft underwent changes after DSEK, which may account for the induced hyperopia and its diminishment over time via changes in the posterior corneal curvature. Results suggest that intraocular lenses be targeted to -1.00 to -1.25 D of myopia for combined DSEK and cataract procedures.
The differences in the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of quinolone antibiotics may affect the endophthalmitis incidence after cataract surgery. The significant difference in endophthalmitis rates between gatifloxacin and moxifloxacin requires further study.
The amniotic membrane (AM) has a long history of use in the treatment of various diseases of the ocular surface. It contains pluripotent cells, highly organized collagen, anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory cytokines, immune-modulators, growth factors, and matrix proteins. It is used to promote corneal healing in severely damaged eyes. Recently, AM extract and AM extract eye drops have been successfully used in clinical applications, including dry eye and chemical burns. We provide an overview on the recent progress in the preparation, mechanisms of action, and use of AM extract/AM extract eye drops for corneal and external eye diseases.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
