BackgroundThe aim of this study was to evaluate effects of different polishing methods and whitening agents on surface hardness and roughness of nano-hybrid composite resin. Material and MethodsIn total, one hundred twenty disc-shaped specimens were prepared to nano-hybrid composite (Charisma Diamond). 60 samples were used for microhardness measurements and the others were used for the evaluation of surface roughness. Samples were divided randomly into two subgroups (n = 30 each). In first group a low-viscosity liquid polishing agent (Biscover LV) was applied. In the second group, nothing was applied. All the samples were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h. After initial measurements were completed, samples were divided randomly into three subgroups for bleaching application. 10% carbamide peroxide (Opalescence PF), 45% carbamide peroxide (Opalescence PF Quick), 38% hydrogen peroxide (Opalescence Boost) was applied. Then microhardness and surface roughness measurements of samples were repeated and data were recorded as final values for each sample.ResultsWhen the polishing techniques were compared, no signicant difference was observed in surface hardness and roughness. When the bleaching agents were compared, the 10% carbamide peroxide and 38% hydrogen peroxide containing bleaching agent groups showed statistically significant differences between pre- and post-procedure hardness values (p<0.05).ConclusionsOffice-type bleaching agent containing CP was observed to be more secure for composite resins than other bleaching agents. No negative effect of glaze materials on the protection of surface roughness and hardness of composite resin was observed. Key words:Composite resin, bleaching, surface hardness, surface roughness.

BackgroundThe aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a desensitizing agent on microleakage of Class V cavities.Material and Methods72 premolar teeth were used. There were 6 groups. Class V restorations were prepared with two different restorative materials (Equia fil, GC, America and Grandio, VOCO, Germany) and two adhesive systems (Clearfil SE Bond, Kuraray, Japan and S3 Bond Plus, Kuraray, Japan) with and without desensitizing agent (Gluma Desensitizer, Heraeus Kulzer, Germany). Restorations were polished with aluminum oxide abrasive discs. Then a range of 5 - 55C thermocycling was performed 10.000 times. The microleakage of restorations was examined with dye penetration method (Basic fuchsine). Bonferroni corrections and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to determine the significance of differences in occlusal and gingival dye penetration scores between groups.ResultsThere was no stastistical significance between the occlusal and gingival microleakage scores within the groups were shown.ConclusionsIt can be concluded that use of desensitizing agent under both high viscosity glass ionomer restorative materials and resin composites doesn’t affect the microleakage. Key words:High viscosity glass ionomer cement, composite resin, desensitizing agent, microleakage.
Purpose: To determine the instrumental color adjustment potential (CAP-I) of 3 universal composites at 2 time intervals and 2 depths. Methods: Omnichroma, Estelite Sigma Quick, and Filtek Universal Restorative were tested. Two types of specimens were prepared. For dual specimens, Class V restorations were created in anterior denture teeth and restored with resin composites. For single specimens, replications were fabricated with resin composites (n = 10). Unrestored teeth were used for comparison. Color was measured with a spectrophotometer at 24 h and 1 month, and CAP-I was calculated. Data were compared by analysis of variance followed by the Student t-test and paired sample t-test. Results:The CAP-I of tested materials ranged from 0.11 to 0.27 at 24 h and from 0.60 to 0.76 at 1 month. At 24 h, Omnichroma yielded the highest values, followed by Estelite Sigma Quick and Filtek Universal Restorative (P < 0.05). CAP-I was significantly higher at 1 month than at 24 h in all groups. In all groups, restorations with a depth of 3.0 mm yielded better results than restorations with a depth of 2.0 mm (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Storage time and restoration depth were positively associated with CAP-I. Single-shade and multi-shade universal composites are good alternatives for color-matched, esthetically satisfying restorations.
It can be concluded that diagnostic performance of the methods was insufficient for detecting incipient occlusal caries lesions by itself. Performance can be improved by using them with VI as a traditional caries detection method.
